U.S. Army Reservist Reaches Settlement with Former Employer over USERRA Violations

The U.S. Department of Justice recently reached a settlement with All Battery Sales and Service of Everett, Washington, to resolve a lawsuit filed by Curtis Kirk, a U.S. Army reservist. The lawsuit alleged that All Battery failed to properly rehire Mr. Kirk after he finished his tour during Operation Iraqi Freedom and then demoted and ultimately fired him without just cause.

Exxon shows lack of support for gays, lesbians

The term Equal Opportunity does not appear in the Exxon Employment Bill of Rights. The corporate giant maintains a determined stance to oppose hiring gays and lesbians in the workplace. Next week, Exxon will once again have the issue on its shareholder ballet. This makes the 14th year in a row it has appeared there.

Criminal convictions no longer bar to employment

In a huge step forward, New York's attorney general has announced an agreement that outlaws the automatic disqualification of a job candidate owing to a criminal conviction history. The historic agreement with industry giant Quest Diagnostics spells out an end to this form of employment discrimination that has made meaningless the rehabilitative efforts of many hundreds who have worked hard to show they are fit to reenter the workplace.
