Workplace discrimination can be a traumatic experience. However, it is often a difficult process to try and explain to others.

Often, coworkers may not notice any harassment you are facing. As a result, it is important to find ways of expressing your experience so that others may be able to assist. Furthermore, having documented evidence could assist in any legal proceedings. Outlined below are 3 useful ways that you can document workplace discrimination:

Keep a note of your pay stubs

Sometimes, a change in working hours can be an early sign of workplace discrimination. Keeping a note of your earnings will prove how much you made both before and after the alleged discrimination. Additionally, it will provide evidence of the financial impact any discrimination has had on your life.

Record incidents in a diary

Although unfortunate events in the workplace are likely to stay on your mind, it is a useful tip not to rely on memory alone. As well as knowing the type of incident and harm caused, it is important to know the exact time and place that it occurred. Being able to document the exact time and place of each incident can be very helpful, and it will also emphasize the scale of the problem.

Keep medical records

Although workplace discrimination and harassment may not impact you physically, it will likely affect your mental health. Having a record of your symptoms and any treatments you’ve received will prove the impact that discrimination has had on your health.

Knowing how to record incidents of workplace discrimination could be in your best interests. As an employee, it is important to understand that you have legal rights and protections.
