Women overwhelming experience workplace discrimination

New York residents that work in computer-related jobs may be interested in learning that about 75 percent of woman reported experiencing workplace discrimination. According to the report, which was issued by the Pew Research Center, just 16 percent of men in the same industry experienced discrimination in the workplace.

The Pew researchers reportedly surveyed more than 2,300 people that were employed in technology and science jobs. About 50 percent of women working in science and technology fields reported that they had experienced workplace discrimination, such as gender harassment. When the numbers were broken down, 29 percent of female employees said that they earned less than their male colleagues did. Another 29 percent reported that they were treated as if they were incompetent at their jobs. About 20 percent of women reported that they experienced small slights or less support from their supervisors for their work than their male colleagues.

Additionally, the report noted that people of color also experienced higher levels of discrimination when compared to others. About 62 percent of black employees employed in STEM jobs, for example, said that they experienced racial discrimination. Comparatively, 44 percent of Asians and 42 percent of Hispanics reported experiencing racial discrimination at their places of work.

Employers cannot legally discriminate against an employee due to his or her gender. This includes not hiring a person or passing over someone for a promotion. Further, it is illegal for employers to allow continued sexual harassment against an employee. If someone reports gender discrimination or sexual harassment to an employer, and the employer either refuses to rectify the situation or punishes the employee, he or she may have legal options available. An attorney may assist with gathering evidence that shows that gender discrimination did occur and that the employer had a history of discrimination against employees for their gender. If a settlement cannot be reached out of court, a lawyer may assist with filing a lawsuit.
