Stopping age discrimination in the workplace

Despite having a wealth of experience and wisdom, it is not unusual for older workers in New York to be discriminated against. Even though it is nearly impossible to control how the working world may perceive them because of their maturity, older workers can take certain steps to avoid being discriminated against because of their age.

As the workplace continues to evolve, it is important to remain a relevant part of the workforce. This requires doing what it takes to remain on top of current technology being used in their field. Being flexible about the changes that occurring in the workplace is also necessary. It is best to avoid being set apart from their younger peers for the wrong reasons.

Acceptance of change is a key component to remaining relevant in the workplace as one grows older. As old procedures are being replaced by more modern methods and advancements, it will be necessary willfully accept the changes to be viewed as professionally relevant and an integral part of the workplace. While it is important to adjust to the changing workplace, it does not mean older workers should forfeit their rights. Workers who are at least 40 years old are protected from being discriminated against because of their age under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act.

Those who believe that they are a victim of workplace age discrimination should consider all of their legal options. An attorney who practice employment law may file charges with the appropriate federal agencies on behalf of clients who have been the target of such behavior. Financial compensation may be pursued for acts such as wrongful termination, being denied a promotion, an unwarranted demotion, or inadequate compensation.
