Why sexual harassment allegations caused backlash against Uber

New York residents who rely on ride-share companies to get around town may be interested to learn why a sexual harassment claim made by a former female software engineer managed to cause Uber to have so much backlash. The company has had other issues in the past, including a driver protest over the wages, accusations of customers being sexually assaulted by drivers and the CEO's involvement on the Trump advisory team.

The media storm the sexual harassment allegations caused have been unlike anything companies have seen before. Other allegations of sexual harassment against companies have largely gone unnoticed, such as Ellen Pao's lawsuit against Kleiner Perkins and a female engineer's lawsuit against Tesla Motors. One hypothesis is that Uber's CEO has become a poster child for everything that people associate with Silicon Valley. Another hypothesis suggests, however, is that it is because the company has no brand integrity.

Uber was designed to provide people with a personalized service. When the allegations were made by the former female software engineer and others then came forward with their experiences, the company's image was shattered. While Uber had been seen as a progressive and equal brand, the allegations made it clear that the company did not ethically treat its employees.

When employees are facing sexual harassment at work, such as unwanted sexual comments or inappropriate jokes, their performance may suffer or they may even be fired in retaliation if they complain. An attorney may assist with filing a lawsuit against the employer in order to seek any wages that the employee did not receive due to being fired. Additionally, the attorney may help these employees get reinstated at their job so that they can continue to earn an income. If negotiations do not go anywhere, the case may go to trial.
