navigating the complex world
of employment law

You’ve been fired -- now what?

You walk into work one day, as you do on any given work day, and find out that you are being fired. You feel confused and frustrated, not to mention sad. You have no idea why you are being fired. Many people have been through this unfortunate scenario.

On the other hand, some have experienced what might be an even worse scenario. They go to work every day and get the cold shoulder from management. They are scolded for things that every employee does. Day by day they feel that they could be fired any minute. They try to figure out why management is displeased with them, but they can never get a clear answer. One day they come in and learn that they are being fired.

No matter how the scenario plays out, it never feels good. This is especially true if you suspect that you’ve been wrongfully terminated. So now that you’ve been fired, what can you do? First, it’s important to contact an employees’ rights attorney and discuss your case. An experienced attorney will be able to tell you if you have a case.

In the meantime, it can also be useful to get more information about your termination. Find out who fired you and what the reason was. Ask your former employer if you can review your personnel file. Don’t act negatively toward your ex-employer, but also do not let them intimidate you.

Take a look at any documents that may be helpful to your case, such as your employment contract. Once you have gathered the evidence you need for your case, work with your attorney to file a claim, if warranted.
